Egg Retrieval Surgery

Egg retrieval is a key step in assisted reproductive treatments (egg freezing and IVF) and is usually performed approximately 10–14 days after ovarian stimulation injections.

The procedure is carried out under intravenous conscious sedation and does not require hospitalization. Guided by transvaginal ultrasound, the physician inserts a retrieval needle through the vaginal wall to aspirate the ovarian follicles. The entire procedure takes only 15–30 minutes, involves no abdominal incisions, is painless under anesthesia, and patients can return home the same day.

Egg Retrieval Procedure (for Egg Freezing / IVF)

Preoperative Evaluation:
On menstrual cycle days 1–3, blood tests (AMH and hormone levels) and a transvaginal ultrasound are performed for assessment.

Ovarian Stimulation Phase:
Ovarian stimulation injections are administered for 8–10 days, with follow-up visits to monitor follicle growth.

Trigger Injection:
When the follicles reach maturity, a trigger shot is administered. Egg retrieval is scheduled approximately 34–36 hours later.

Egg Retrieval Surgery:
On the day of surgery, intravenous anesthesia is administered. Under transvaginal ultrasound guidance, the physician inserts a retrieval needle through the vaginal wall into the pelvic cavity to aspirate follicular fluid.

Oocyte Handling:
The embryologist identifies the eggs under a microscope and proceeds with cryopreservation or fertilization.

Key Points and Precautions

Fasting Before Surgery:
No food or water for 8 hours before surgery.

Escort and Safety:
Because general anesthesia is administered, patients must not drive or ride a motorcycle afterward. An adult companion is recommended on the day of surgery.

Possible Side Effects:
Mild abdominal bloating, decreased urination, nausea, or slight vaginal bleeding may occur. Most symptoms resolve within three days.

Dietary Recommendations:
Drink plenty of water (more than 2000 mL per day) and consume a high-protein diet to reduce the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation-related fluid retention.

Activity Restrictions:
Avoid strenuous exercise, bathing in tubs or hot springs, and sexual intercourse for one week after the procedure. Seek medical attention immediately if experiencing severe abdominal pain, heavy vaginal bleeding, or shortness of breath.
